Subject: NCLM Town Hall Day - Register now - Annexation opponents plan activities for same day

Anti-annexation lobbying effort planned to coincide with the League’s Town Hall Day

Opponents of annexation will be in the Legislature to make their case.

Will you be there to make your position known? Will your municipality be represented?

Let’s make sure we are not outnumbered on May 11.

Will your city or town be at NCLM Town Hall Day to represent your citizens on this issue and other legislative issues of importance to municipal citizens? If you haven’t registered for Town Hall Day yet, there is still time. Go to www.nclm.org and register online or call the League office at (919) 715-4000 for registration materials.

Annexation opponents are calling for a rally in Raleigh on May 11 because that is NCLM Town Hall Day. As they write on their website, they want people to “come and help us show them [legislators] that now is time to change the annexation laws!”

A number of bills have been introduced this session that would, in effect, eliminate city-initiated annexations. The League, based on the long-standing policies developed by municipal officials, opposes these anti-annexation bills.

Legislators are considering numerous (hundreds) other bills that would affect municipalities and their operations. NCLM Town Hall Day on May 11 comes at a crucial time – just days away from the General Assembly’s self-imposed crossover deadline when most non-finance bills have to pass one body (either the House or the Senate) to remain eligible for consideration. Come learn the latest on the prospects for funding infrastructure needs, unfunded mandates and more.

Please register today for Town Hall Day – it is your opportunity to have a strong voice in the General Assembly.

Details on Town Hall Day

The League will hold two legislative briefings at the N.C. Museum of History Auditorium – the first at 10 a.m. and the second at 10: 45 a.m.

Take your legislator to lunch. From 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., there will be a barbecue buffet at the N.C. Archives & History Picnic Park, located across from the Legislative Building (corner of Wilmington & Lane Streets). Look for the yellow and white tents.
