A Grassroots Effort to End forced Annexation Abuse in North Carolina

"We lay it down as a fundamental, that laws, to be just, must give a reciprocation of right; that, without this, they are mere arbitrary rules of conduct, founded in force, and not in conscience." --Thomas Jefferson

Annexation vexation

'Several North Carolina communities have had raging debates and unhappiness over annexation issues. Many attributed Fayetteville Mayor Marshall Pitt's recent defeat to his position on annexing 27 square miles and 46,000 residents into Fayetteville. Opponents of the plan wanted to vote on the measure, complaining that they were not going to be getting new city services any time soon so they shouldn't have to pay the increased taxes. The North Carolina League of Municipalities has said the issue of retaining powers of forced annexation is a top priority for the group, even though North Carolina is only one of seven states that still allow the process. The issue is heated and promises to generate even more heat following the US Supreme Court's ruling that governments can take property to use for economic development projects. Residents of Fayetteville made no secret of their displeasure with Mayor Pitts. Are we likely to see this same action by voters in other communities across the state?  Was this a result of Fayetteville taking too much too fast? Would this have been as much an issue if the city had done several smaller annexations? Does it matter that we are only one of seven states to allow forced annexation?  Is the forced annexation process too easy?  Can we expect to see any changes in the annexation laws?'
