November 25, 2003 - Dutchman Down's Press Release

Dutchman Downs Residents Stage Own Tea Party to Protest Annexation

Dutchman Downs residents will stage their own Tea Party to protest Cary's Annexation of their neighborhood. Ron Thoreson, spokesman for the residents protesting the rapid annexation decision without notice, said residents will be wearing red shirts and will bring tea to ceremoniously dump in front of Town Hall to demonstrate their opposition to taxation without representation.

The Dutchman Downs residents did not vote for Town of Cary officials. Dutchman Downs is represented by the Wake County Commissioners, but Cary's decision to proceed with an involuntary annexation circumvents the Commissioners' ability to vote on annexation. The neighborhood does not want to be annexed.

To register their strong opposition to annexation, many residents will be boycotting all Cary Merchants over the lucrative holiday weekend. "The Tea Party Rebellion provides a tangible symbol of what our forefathers fought for -- and, we thought, we had achieved: a representative government, personal freedom, and no taxation (or property-taking) without representation," said Thoreson.
