2009 Reform Bills
introduced |
2011 Annexation Legislation Updates
Thanks to everyone who worked hard on
making forced annexation an issue in the 2010 elections. This has made
quite a difference in the General Assembly. This gave us a majority of Legislators who
made it a
priority issue to put an end to forced annexation by giving North
Carolina property owners a meaningful voice in the decision to become
part of a municipality.
We now have legislation that will eliminate the injustices
of forced annexation!
These changes to the law will improve the way cities approach property owners who live in
unincorporated areas around cities and towns with the idea of joining
the municipality. The positive consequences of this change to law will
actually help improve cities and protect the interests of the city
residents. Most importantly it will restore justice
and fairness to North Carolina's laws governing cities and towns and the
way annexation is done by the cities.
On this page you will find information about the Legislation introduced to change
the annexation laws and how those bills progressed in the General Assembly.
You will also find contact information for Legislators.

Analysis of H524 (2009) compared to the NCLM's "20 Point
Proposals" for annexation reform:
HERE |
Here is a suggestion for everyone across NC who cares
about this issue.
If thousands of people from across NC would
send a postcard to these six key legislators, it would be hard to ignore and
would emphasize the commitment of people across the State to annexation
reform.
It would be an underline of emphasis to our demand for reform.
Please consider sending these postcards to:
Senator Phil Berger, 16 W. Jones Street,
Room 2007 Raleigh, NC 27601-2808
Senator James Forrester
16 W. Jones Street,
Room 1028

Simply say that you are asking them to pass legislation that
1)
restores a meaningful voice to the property owners affected
2) puts an end to the high costs for city utilities that replace
perfectly good private services.
